DRY HEALING
Dry healing is a traditional method that keeps the tattoo clean and dry without the use of a long-term adhesive bandage. It encourages the skin to form its own protective barrier and heal naturally. Follow this day-by-day guide carefully and don’t hesitate to email me at coblou.tattoo@gmail.com if you have any questions.
3–5 Hours After Your Appointment
• Remove your bandage with clean, dry hands. Discard it immediately, then wash your hands again before touching the tattoo.
• Wash your tattoo thoroughly with unscented, fragrance-free soap using gentle motions. Rinse well with lukewarm water.
• Allow it to air dry completely. Do not use a previously used cloth towel. If you must, a clean paper towel to gently pat (not rub) the area is acceptable, but air drying is preferred.
• Do not apply moisturizer yet. Moisturizing too early is one of the most common causes of heat rash and irritation on fresh tattoos.
Before Bed: Night 1
• With clean hands, loosely wrap the cleaned and dried tattoo using sterile gauze or a fresh puppy pad. This protects the healing skin from rubbing against bedding and prevents bacteria transfer while you sleep.
• In the morning, gently wash away any dried lymph fluid, blood, or ink that has seeped overnight. Air dry thoroughly.
Day 1: The Day After Your Appointment
• Wash your tattoo when you wake up. Air dry completely.
• Apply a fresh layer of gauze and keep the tattoo covered throughout the day.
• Continue to avoid moisturizer. Your skin is still in its earliest and most vulnerable healing stage.
• Before bed: remove the gauze with clean hands, wash, air dry, and re-wrap with fresh gauze for the night.
Day 2
• Wash your tattoo when you wake up. Air dry completely.
• By now, the surface of the tattoo should have formed a light scab. At this stage, it is safe to leave it uncovered under loose, breathable clothing rather than gauze.
• Keep it out of direct sun, away from harsh elements, and protected from friction throughout the day.
In Conclusion
Around day 3–4, your tattoo will begin to scab and peel. This is a phase that typically lasts another 3–5 days depending on the size and style of your piece. This is a completely normal part of dry healing. A dry-healed tattoo will usually form a more defined scab compared to one healed under Saniderm.
Once the peeling stage begins, you may start applying thin layers of fragrance-free, unscented moisturizer to relieve dryness and itching. Keep the tattoo clean, dry between washes, and protected from the sun until the skin is fully healed. y
