Getting your first tattoo
Getting your first tattoo can be exciting and overwhelming all at once. I still remember my first tattoo, the artist took so much time to make the experience memorable for me and I want to give the same experience to my clients. Whether you're dabbling with the idea of getting a tattoo or have already booked, here's a small guide to help you prepare for your first step into the world of tattooing.
Choosing the right design
In very rare cases, someone will go from zero tattoos to a full sleeve and that's possible if you feel confidant and ready. That being said, In my opinion the best design for a first tattoo is always on the smaller side and simple enough to be done in 1 hour or less. This gives you the chance to adjust to a new experience without having to invest too much time, energy and money. A smaller design will allow you to dip your toes and get a feeling for the whole process. If you love it, you can book another one!
Placement considerations
When getting your first tattoo it's also important to take some time to think about where you want to place it. Consider your lifestyle and the level of visibility you're comfortable with.
If you're freshly 18 I always suggest avoiding highly visible areas such as your neck, chest, hands and face until you grow into your personal style a little bit. This doesn't mean you can't explore tattoos in less visible spots but save your best spots for when you have a small collection on your body already. Tattoos are a long-form art and our style will evolve and grow with us.
If pain is a concern for you, the sides of your lower legs is generally a pretty tolerable spot and a good way to test your pain tolerance.
Aftercare
After your tattoo is finished, your artist should always go through aftercare instructions with you to teach you how to care for your piece as it's healing. In short, being in the sun and swimming won't be possible during healing so it's important to consider that before booking.
Here's an article I wrote about aftercare to guide you as you heal your new tattoo!
Tipping etiquette
There's a lot of conflicting information out there about tipping etiquette with your tattoo artist. Overall, a percentage similar to a service industry worker (15%-20%) is a common practice. Every artist will have their own expectations around that and I encourage you to ask ahead of time what your artist prefers. Transparency is always the best way to go if you're unsure!
My personal preference around tipping is that it's always appreciated but never required. If your budget only allows for my hourly rate and quoted price, there is never any hard feelings on my end! I also love stickers, small cat figurines, hot-wheels toy cars and drawings made by my clients. I value those little thoughtful gifts as much as any monetary amount.
Booking policies
Before booking your tattoo I encourage you to get familiar with your artists booking and pricing policies. Most artists require non-refundable deposits (including myself) the amount will vary depending on the artist and their unique policies. You can find my booking policy here.
Consultations and studio visits
Every artist has different practices regarding this but I always offer 1 free consultation for all projects no matter the size. I don't require you to book officially in order to get this initial consultation. If you're nervous and want to come meet me, get a tour of the studio and chat about your ideas you can email me at coblou.tattoo@gmail.com and request a consultation. After our consultation you can choose if you want to book with me or go another route.
In conclusion
Consider treating your first tattoo as a test-run. Don't commit to too much, get familiar with healing requirements and your chosen artist's policies. Don't be afraid to speak up if the design isn't exactly the way you want it. You're always in control of what goes on your body and your artist is there to work alongside you to make your vision happen.
